All high school and college Physics

SAT Prep in Verbal/Math/Writing

Education

B.A. In Mathematics and M.A. in Theoretical Physics from UC Berkeley.
On leave from Physics Ph.D at UCB

Experience:

As a graduate student instructor at UC Berkeley from 2004-2008, I gathered extensive experience teaching mathematics and physics in a classroom setting, teaching courses ranging from “Physics for Future Presidents” ( a course for non-science majors), to advance courses for Physics Majors. In addition, I have tutored a wide range of students via my work as a department tutor at UC Berkeley, and as a private tutor in the Bay area, working with middle and high school students on math and science as well as AP and SAT test preparation. Recently, I gained valuable experience in SAT test strategies and preparation while working at Catalyst, a major test prep company.

I've taken virtually every required math and physics course for both majors at UC Berkeley, so I'm especially qualified to help you in these classes

I want to be a tutor because it's fun!

Hobbies:

Besides math and physics, I also have a lifelong interest in music. I've played the piano all my life, and I'm currently studying voice and choral conducting.

I was just accepted to Indiana University's Choral Conducting program, which I plan to attend next fall

Hourly Rate:
$40.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Any day at any time

Lives Near:
94720 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

SAT prep, AP prep, English, French, 1st year Sp... Tutor in Berkeley, CA

Tutor Profile

Gender:
Female

Preferred Subjects

SAT prep, AP prep, English, French, 1st year Spanish, Math, Physics, Computer Skills

Education

First year Linguistics major at UC Berkeley

Experience:

SAT score: 2220

SAT Subject tests:
790 French
750 Mathematics Level 2
660 U.S. History

AP tests:
5 = French language
5 = Government & Politics (US)
5 = Physics B
5 = Physics C: Mechanics
5 = Calculus BC
5 = English Language
5 = English Literature
5 = Psychology
5 = US History
4 = European History

I have 5 years' experience in French, 2 years in AP Physics, 6 years of honors or AP English writing instruction... and 8 years of taking standardized tests! That means I know how to effectively manage time during multiple choice and essay tests, and I can teach smart testing skills, including how to structure and write a short essay to make the most of a time limit.

True, I have a long history of taking standardized test, but what I really love is teaching--helping others learn the underlying concepts of a subject that make the difference between memorization and true understanding. As a martial arts instructor, I learned that being able to teach what you know directly to someone else is the most rewarding way to pass on knowledge. Academic subjects are no different! I have been tutoring friends in English and math (up to single-variable calculus) since middle school and as a senior in high school, I volunteered at my school to tutor other students in AP Physics.

My specialties are SAT and AP test preparation, including timed essay writing, but I love to help with any of my subjects of experience. My goal is to help others achieve the same level of success that I had in high school. More importantly, though, I want to make sure that the people I tutor come away with a thorough understanding of the material!

Hobbies:

Martial arts
Hiking
Rock climbing and rappelling
Creative writing
Sketching/painting

Hourly Rate:
$16.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Mon/Wed/Fri in the morning
Monday after 3PM
Tues/Thurs after 4PM
Wednesday after 6PM
Friday after 3PM
Weekends at any time

Lives Near:
94720 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

English, English (Writing), Philosophy, Literat... Tutor in Berkeley, CA

Tutor Profile

Gender:
Male

Preferred Subjects

English, English (Writing), Philosophy, Literature, Essay Editing, SAT, ACT, SAT II, AP, Computer Skills, HTML, Web Design, Study Skills, Organization, Study Skills/Organization

Education

Junior English/Rhetoric Major at UC Berkeley (3.95 GPA)

Experience:

ACT: 34, SAT: 2190 (12 Writing), SAT II Lit: 790, SAT II Math 2: 760, AP English Literature: 5, AP English Language and Composition: 5, AP Calculus: 5

I believe that a successful mentor/student relationship emerges not only out of an understanding of a specific student's individual academic needs, but also out of a mutual enthusiasm for the process of learning and the reward of understanding. My tutoring approach seeks to address both of these crucial elements: tailoring instruction to what the student needs to improve, and providing a productive and positive learning environment that encourages that progress.

I served as an English tutor throughout the last two years of my high school education, focusing on the advancement of students' critical analysis and rudimentary compositional skills with an emphasis on improving test takers' competency and confidence on the Advanced Placement exams, SAT writing portions, and in-class assignments. During my time as a student at the University of California, Berkeley, I was offered a position as a writing tutor with the university SLC Learning Center. Additionally, I was selected as the Daily Californian's Monday columnist by the editorial board as well as a student body vote and am involved with research regarding war tribunals in Bosnia and Sierra Leone.

Hobbies:

In my free time I compete for UC Berkeley's Trial Team (competitive speaking in a legal setting) and pursue my two greatest passions: writing and skydiving. I have skied whenever the snow was good for the last 15 years, raced with the Berkeley ski team, and am a fantastic Rock Band and Guitar Hero drummer. I also am an avid web designer, having run a freelance web design business for many years.

My goals include attending a top ten law school, traveling around the world to ski and BASE jump, and publishing my first novel.

Hourly Rate:
$30.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekends at any time
Tues/Thurs at any time

Lives Near:
94704 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

Algebra, Geometry, English (ESL), Basic French Tutor in Berkeley, CA

Tutor Profile

Gender:
Female

Preferred Subjects

Algebra, Geometry, English (ESL), Basic French

Education

Freshman, Art History Major/Undecided at University of California, Berkeley

Experience:

I love to help younger kids learn. I think it is unfortunate that kids are rarely given individual attention from teachers, especially with subjects such as Math, which can be so much easier if only teachers would go through it step by step and repeat or find others ways to solve a problem if the students do not understand.

Through experience, I also know (at least in public ones) that high school second language classes tend to be almost useless therefore tutoring or studying abroad is most essential to learning the language well. I would like to contribute to this learning process.

I took math up to AP Calculus AB in high school, including math in the International Baccalaureate Program (IB). I prepared for the SATs since 9th grade through intensive prep classes. SAT Math: 760, SAT II Math IIC: 740

As for English, I took both up to two years of AP and IB English classes in high school. I did ESL as well when I first came to the United States in 2nd grade and know how it feels to not be able to speak English as a first language.

I lived in Paris, France for 2 years for 7th and 8th grade, took French up to AP and IB French in high school, and am taking French 3 at UC Berkeley currently.

Hobbies:

I am a girl who likes to have a good laugh and go on adventures but that doesn't mean that I don't know when to take things seriously and crack down to work. I am a big peoples-person so meeting new people can be one of the most exciting things for me among music, art, books, nature, movies, and many more. My favorite band are The Beatles, I love all kinds of art and my favorite books are The Lord of the Rings trilogy although I enjoy books from all genre. Some of my hobbies are playing the guitar, playing tennis, writing in my journal, walking around in nature or simply chatting with friends.

Hourly Rate:
$20.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Tues/Thurs after 7PM
Monday after 4PM
Wednesday after 5PM

Lives Near:
94720 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor
