Hobbies
TED talks are very interesting to me. My favorites are the talks on architecture and the environment. I enjoy spending time with my wife. She's enthusiastically studying German at UC Berkeley, and she asks me to speak to her in German anytime we're just chatting. On weekends we explore the Bay Area's beautiful cultural and hiking opportunities. My musical interests have been mostly in classical, but I enjoy all types of music, and I'm currently going through the top-selling 50 albums, which are all pop. I'm working with a sound engineer to produce the first album of my music. I've heard from students, friends, and family, anytime I'm tutoring music, English, or German, or just explaining to them how to use a computer feature, that I'm very patient. My favorite compliment came this summer, when my 5th grade ESL student in China told his mom's coworker, "I had almost given up on playing piano. Then I met Jan, and he made me excited about it again." (We would incorporate a short piano lesson into the English lesson, as a different way to approach English.)
