Experience

I was always a level above in mathematics in high school than even my most advanced classmates and I took every AP (advanced placement) English and Mathematics course offered, passing them with a either 4 or 5. I have a lot of experience tutoring people both in English - at a high school and college level - and in Mathematics - particularly in Algebra and Statistics. I have also tutored people for whom English was a second language, helping them build their resumes and sharpen their conversational and interviewing skills in order to help them secure internships. I also have a psychology background and I can not only help tutor the subject but I also know a lot about child development and learning as well as about different teaching methods. I can also work with people with learning disabilities. I want to be a tutor because I have always believed that if someone struggles in a subject it is either because they are not taught well or because there is something lacking in their previous educational background. This belief is based on my previous experience as a tutor, where I have seen people succeed in subjects they hated or did not do well in by either having things explained to them in a different way or by pinpointing what in their educational background they were missing that when taught would help them understand the current problem they were dealing with. I want to be a tutor because I want to try to ameliorate people's struggles and try to help them reach their full potential. I usually try to think outside the box when explaining new information to people and I try to explain material in words and scenarios that they can comprehend. I always come well prepared but I am also flexible and innovative enough to switch approaches when a person does not understand. Furthermore, I think that being bilingual has given me an extra advantage to teaching English because I understand certain nuances that people take for granted in their native language and because I am able to sympathize with the challenges of learning to express yourself.

Hobbies

I have a strong interest in the brain - particularly its capacity to regenerate and its connection to the body (specifically the mind-body connection). I am planning on starting my Masters in Neuroscience in a couple of years and moving down that track to pursue a career. I love traveling! I have been traveling and living in foreign countries for the last 3 years and I have covered most European countries. I have also covered about half of the US States. I have previously visited South East Asia and New Zealand and I have lived in Australia. I also love being outdoors. I love skiing in the winter and playing ultimate frisbee (always!). I helped start an Ultimate Frisbee team in Romania, teaching various skills to beginners in a country where the concept of exercise is not well grasped. I also love running. Finally, I love meeting new people.
