Private tutor in Berkeley, CA
Education
Post-doc Organic Chemistry, University of Chicago Ph.D. Organic Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley B.S. Chemistry, University of Notre Dame (IN)
Experience
In addition to private tutoring, I have held several chemistry teaching positions: - GSI (teaching assistant) at UC Berkeley for Chem 3A/B (sophomore organic chemistry) - GSI for graduate-level organic synthesis - TA for analytical chemistry - Lab instructor for general chemistry What makes organic chemistry so difficult is the number of different types of concepts that are covered in such a short time. These concepts build on each other, so it's important to have a good understanding of each concept as the course progresses. Some of the common topics that I cover: - Electronic structure and bonding - Drawing compounds - Resonance structures - Stereochemistry - Thermodynamics, kinetics, and energy diagrams - Functional groups - Drawing arrow pushing mechanisms (e.g. radical reactions, SN1, SN2, E1, E2, reactions of carbonyls, etc.) - Recognizing reaction types - Predicting products - Retrosynthesis and synthetic planning - Aromaticity - Biomolecules (e.g. carbohydrates and peptides) - Lab techniques - Spectroscopy and structure elucidation Face-to-face tutoring is the best, but I also offer online sessions for people with full schedules or limited transportation. Email me for more info!
